Notice of Public Information Centre – Elk Street Reconstruction

BACKGROUND

The Town of Aylmer is currently working toward the eventual reconstruction of Elk Street from John Street South to Talbot Street South/ Highway 3.

A PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE will be held on THURSDAY, 18 AUGUST 2022 from 6:00 PM. to 8:00 PM at the East Elgin Community Complex, 531 Talbot Street West, Aylmer, Ontario to discuss the project, to allow input from the public, and to address any items of concern. 

Subject to comments received and the receipt of necessary approvals, the Town of Aylmer intends to proceed with planning and final design of this project likely to be completed in two phases. 

DETAILS OF CONSTRUCTION

Area of Work

The scope of underground work generally includes replacement of the existing watermain, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems including mainline and residential services. It is anticipated that Phase 1 will commence mid-way between Victoria Street South Talbot Street South and progress east and west toward Talbot Street South and Victoria Street South, respectively.  Phase 2 will likely commence at Victoria Street South and progress westward to John Street South.

Barrier curb and gutter will be replaced throughout, and existing sidewalks will be removed and replaced with 1.5m to 1.8m wide sidewalks.  New sidewalks will be provided along the extent of the roadway where they are not currently present.  Existing trees that have become unsafe or are in conflict with proposed the proposed works will be removed and replaced with new 75mmø trees behind the property lines at a ratio of 2:1 for each tree removed. Driveways will be restored to match existing surfaces and grassed areas disturbed will be restored with topsoil and sod.

On-street parking will be removed, and new bicycle lanes will be provided on both sides of the road from John Street South to Talbot Street South .

Road closures will be permitted throughout construction. Access to local residences will be maintained except for short periods when trenches or new concrete work may block entrances.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

Once the final design has been completed, the Town will evaluate the project for inclusion into future capital budgets.
