Town of Aylmer selected as a recipient of Seniors Community Grant from the Government of Ontario

August 2024

Aylmer, Ontario – The Town of Aylmer is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a Seniors Community Grant for the project “Active Living East Elgin” set to launch this fall.  Funding of up to $14,004.00 was announced at the meeting of Aylmer Town Council on August 14, 2024.

The purpose of this new initiative is to promote active living among older adults in the community and to provide a community meeting place for participants to gather and enjoy activities.

This project includes free recreation programming for older adults delivered between September 2024 and March 2025 through a series of workshops and drop- in recreation programs. Recreation programming to be offered includes a monthly drop in Connection Club/Circle of Friends.  This half day program will offer a variety of active and passive social activities such as pickleball, shuffleboard, cards and games with light refreshments and snacks provided. This project also includes a monthly lunch and learn series featuring various topics relatable to older adults such as yoga/fitness, winter planter building, fraud prevention, safety at home and SafeGuard Water Safety training. Monthly workshops will feature a presentation from a community partner or local service provider as well as a luncheon.  It is anticipated that this program will provide free access to recreational programming to approximately 200 older adults in the community and provide opportunities for active living and community engagement.

“Aylmer is proud to have a lively and engaged community of older adults,” said Mayor Jack Couckuyt. “We appreciate the support from the Province of Ontario as these funds will empower our 55+ community to connect, learn, thrive, and continue to enjoy a healthy and fulfilling life here in Aylmer.”

The Government of Ontario’s Seniors Community Grant Program offers support for local, not-for-profit community groups and organizations to deliver programs and learning opportunities for Ontarians aged 55+. The funding allows community groups across the province to offer a wide variety of activities that help seniors to live independently, ensure their safety and security, connect them to their community, avoid isolation, and achieve greater financial security and social connections.
