Town Crier

Prior to widespread literacy and the advent of news media, communities would employ a Town Crier to proclaim the news, local happenings, and government notices to keep residents informed. Now a ceremonial role, the Town Crier is responsible for announcing local government proclamations, opening community events and celebrations, as well as performing other ceremonical functions on behalf of the Town. The Town Crier serves as an ambassador for the community, promoting and fostering civic pride.

Paul Cowley was appointed Town Crier for the Corporation of the Town of Aylmer effective June 4, 2025.

September 19, 2025 – The Aylmer & Area Heritage Festival Opening Event

Good people of Aylmer, noble folk of Malahide, all you proud citizens of Elgin County, gather ’round and lend thine ears.

By joyful decree and in celebration of our cherished past, let it be known throughout the land that the Aylmer & Area Heritage Festival shall commence with great pomp and pageantry on the days of September the 19th, the 20th, and the 21st in the year of our lord 2025.

For three glorious days, our town shall be transformed into a  living tapestry of history and heritage. Let the streets ring with music, the halls echo with laughter and the hearts of all who attend be filled with pride.

Come forth and explore ten historic sites in the grand tradition of the Doors Open Aylmer and Malahide. Marvel at the art and quilt shows. Enjoy and celebrate with me the flock of wasps who seem to be attracted to the fine food wagons.

There shall be music and merriment from the Legion to the Dairy Museum. Let every corner of our Town shine with the stories of old and the joys of today.

This Crier proclaims “Long live Aylmer! Long live Malahide! And long live the heritage of Elgin County!”

And may this festival become a beacon of pride for generations to come.
